What Is Industrial Design

Industrial Design is the professional practice of designing products used by millions of people around the world every day. Industrial designers not only focus on the appearance of a product, but also on how it functions, is manufactured and ultimately the value and experience it provides for users. Every product you have in your home and interact with is the result of a design process and thousands of decisions aimed at improving your life through design.
Emerging as a professional practice in the early 19th Century, industrial design has come a long way since its early inception and is thriving as a result of an expanded awareness of design in business, collaboration and critical problem solving. Pioneers like Charles and Ray Eames, Henry Dreyfuss and Dieter Rams paved the way for modern industrial designers such as Jony Ives, Yves Béhar, and Pattie Moore, FIDSA, to stand at the forefront of modern industrial design.
In professional practice, industrial designers are often part of multidisciplinary teams made up of strategists, engineers, user interface (UI) designers, user experience (UX) designers, project managers, branding experts, graphic designers, customers and manufacturers all working together towards a common goal. The collaboration of so many different perspectives allows the design team to understand a problem to the fullest extent, then craft a solution that skillfully responds to the unique needs of a user.
Industrial Designer Job Duties
Industrial designers are responsible for the look of many of the products bought, used and consumed every day. It is the job of an industrial designer to create, plan and style manufactured goods, including automobiles, household products, food packaging, consumer electronics and medical equipment.

An industrial designer considers the usability, ergonomics and aesthetics of common mass-produced items and works to improve the design, function, engineering and marketing of these items. Industrial designers are responsible for the familiar look of brands and products like Jeep, iPods and the Coke bottle.

Job Description
Industrial designers work with many different specialists, like materials scientists, engineers, marketers and accountants, to create new products. When beginning a project, industrial designers may start with a client meeting in which they advise the product planning team on how existing products can be improved and new ones introduced. They also work with the market research department to assess the product performance characteristics required by consumers and establish visual characteristics that will give the sales team an edge in the marketplace.

Next, the designers may create and sketch several different design ideas and present these options to the client. After the client has decided what ideas are to be pursued, the industrial designers go to work creating computer renderings with CAD programs and graphic design or photo imaging software; they also create 3-dimensional mock-ups to help clients visualize the final results. After the client decides on the final product design, the project moves to the engineering department for the manufacturing process.

Education
A bachelor's degree in industrial design, architecture or engineering is essential for this career. In addition, an internship and work portfolio are beneficial for securing entry-level positions.

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (www.bls.gov), many industrial designers go on to earn a master's degree in business administration because the industry is increasingly emphasizing strategic design and products that suit the client's overall business plan. Industrial designers with knowledge of accounting, marketing, quality assurance, strategic planning and project management may be more attractive to employers.

Career Skills
Industrial design is a combination of art and engineering; drawing skills, creativity and technical knowledge are critical. Industrial designers must have a good sense of color, balance and proportion, as well as good verbal, visual and written communication skills.

Industrial designers usually choose to work on products in a specific industry, such as the medical, automobile, or technology industry. Successful designers know how to combine art and engineering, and incorporate sustainability, usability and aesthetics. An understanding of marketing, quality assurance, and project management can be helpful for an industrial designer to attract more clients.

What Can I Become If I Study Industrial Design?

A degree in Industrial Design teaches you how to develop and design any kind of product, from mobile phones, to bicycles, furniture and even fashion magazines or videos. Industrial designers are the ones that imagine how consumers might use a product and test different designs for them to see which is the most user-friendly.

That’s why during your industrial design studies, you will learn how to develop design concepts, taking into account social, environmental, functional, financial, and aesthetic aspects. You will also develop IT skills including graphics modelling, multimedia, and web-design.

The next unique product on the market might be yours...

In a nutshell, designers are the brilliant minds that combine the artistic view with IT skills on a daily basis. If you fancy a career in industrial design, then start looking for degrees in the field. A Bachelor’s degree is usually the only requirement for an industrial design career.

However, Master degrees are becoming more common in the field and are recommended since industrial design is increasingly turning into a more competitive industry.

You’ll likely have to showcase your work to impress future employers so remember to develop a strong, original portfolio. Take internships during your studies and take advantage of the opportunity to learn from professionals.

Choose a degree in Industrial Design and use your innovative thinking to transform plain products into mesmerising artefacts. You might just be the next Marc Newson or Takeo Kikuchi!
