Chapter 1: Destination Market

Instructions to Students

Time: 30 Minutes

Use reliable sources such as Google, World Bank, IMF, WTO, Government websites, newspapers, or business magazines to answer the following questions. Write your answers in your own words (2–5 lines each).

1. What is a Destination Market?

Explain the term in your own words and give one real-life example of an Indian product exported to a foreign destination market.

2. Why should an exporter study a country's economy before exporting garments?

List at least four reasons why understanding a country's economic condition is important before entering that market.

3. Find the latest GDP Growth Rate of any two countries (for example: India, USA, Japan, Vietnam, Germany or Bangladesh).

  • Which country has a higher GDP growth?
  • How might this affect demand for apparel?

4. What is Disposable Income?

Explain the term with a daily life example and describe how disposable income influences people's clothing and fashion purchases.

5. What is Inflation?

Find the current inflation rate of India or any one country of your choice.

  • How does rising inflation affect consumers?
  • How might it affect garment retailers and exporters?

6. What is Currency Exchange Rate?

Find today's exchange rate between the Indian Rupee (INR) and the US Dollar (USD).

  • Why is exchange-rate stability important for exporters?

7. Which country imports more apparel than it manufactures?

Choose one country (such as the USA, UK, Germany, or another major importer) and briefly explain why it depends on imported garments.

8. Think Like a Merchandiser

Imagine your company manufactures premium cotton shirts.

Which one country would you choose as your first export market?

Justify your choice using any three factors (for example: GDP, disposable income, inflation, import demand, or market opportunity).
