What is Interior Design Today?


Interior design is all about how we experience spaces. It’s a powerful, essential part of our daily lives and affects how we live, work, play, and even heal. Comfortable homes, functional workplaces, beautiful public spaces—that’s interior design at work.

The best interior designers make it look easy, crafting spaces that anticipate our needs and appeal to our emotions, but in reality a broad set of skills and technical knowledge is required. Interior design has changed dramatically since the early 20th century when it was just beginning to emerge as a profession.

Today, interior designers work with contractors, architects, engineers, craftsmen, furniture dealers, and business and home owners. To become a successful interior designer, you need a well-rounded education and the skills to work within many disciplines (architecture; graphic design; decorative arts; and textile, furniture, and lighting design). COMMERCIAL DESIGN: Commercial interior designers plan public spaces—government buildings, private businesses, or other corporate entities. 1. There Is a Difference Between Decorators and Designers
What’s the difference between interior decorators and interior designers? In one word: education.

Literally anyone can become an interior decorator. Someone who loves playing with colors, fabrics and textiles can become a decorator by simply printing business cards and promoting themselves to clients. This is not necessarily a bad thing, but educational background is also important.

On the other hand, an interior designer must have an accredited education; an associate or bachelor’s degree is a requisite for working in the interior design field. While fabrics, furniture and color may play a large role in interior design, there are plenty of other tasks that are required of interior designers — many of which may seem less like fun and more like work.

Interior designers need to be educated in the history of design, the structural integrity of buildings, building codes, ergonomics, spatial concepts, ethics, psychology, computer-aided drawing (CAD) and much more.

It might seem that interior designers are expected to be Jacks (or Jills) of all trades, doesn’t it? 4. The Salary Isn’t as High as You Think

Show me the money! After all, shouldn’t someone with such a vast education get paid well? It depends. Statistics show that the median salary of an entry-level interior designer in the U.S. is $42,380 per year.

Of course, this depends on a lot of factors, such as education, location, work experience and size of the firm/company. An interior designer at a furniture company will most likely make less than a designer who works for a high-end architectural firm.

Essentially, you can dictate your rate of pay by gaining as much exposure and experience as possible. Someone with education in the fields of architecture, building codes/laws and structural design will more likely become financially successful.



5. You Need to Be a People Person

Ask interior designers to share their experiences, and they will surely relate some horror stories of past clients. People are finicky, especially when it comes to their homes. While some clients have clear goals in mind, others may think they know what they want only to discover that they hate the final product and are dissatisfied with your work.

A successful interior designer is a people pleaser and a mitigator (and sometimes a mind reader) — someone who can steer clients toward a favorable outcome while making them feel they are in full control of the design choices. If you are just coming out of school and are new to the job market, it may be necessary to offer your services for free or at a reduced rate. This is probably the best way to get a portfolio started; it’s also a great way to get to know local merchandisers and suppliers, and develop a rapport for future projects.

7. Competition Is Fierce in Interior Design

Interior design is a competitive business. The key to success is getting yourself noticed. As mentioned above, an amazing designer portfolio will certainly help you land jobs.

Another important factor is acquiring an extensive education. The more you know, the better off you will be. NATA 2017 SYLLABUS CHANGE

The National Aptitude Test in Architecture (NATA) measures the aptitude of the applicant for specific field of study, i.e. Architecture. The test measures drawing and observation skills, sense of proportion, aesthetic sensitivity and critical thinking ability that have been acquired over a long period of time, and that are related to specific field of study, i.e. Architecture.

The NATA (National Aptitude Test in Architecture) is a national level aptitude test organized by Council of Architecture. This exam is organized for those aspirants looking for admission in architecture courses like B.Arch offered by top institutions of the country. This test measures the aptitude of the candidate for the field of architecture. From 2017 onwards, NATA exam will be conducted once in a year on 16th April 2017 via offline mode. NATA score cards are considered by various government, government aided and private colleges or universities for admission in B.Arch programme. Here in this article, we are providing information regarding NATA 2017 including the eligibility criteria, important dates, registration, etc.

NATA 2017 Registration

The NATA 2017 Registration will start from 24th December 2016 and will be open till 29th January 2017.
The registration form will be filled and submitted only through the website.
Candidates are advised to fill the registration form as per the given instructions.
candidates have to upload the scanned images of photograph, signature and thumb impression.
There is no need to send the application by post.

Registration Fee:

The NATA registration fee is Rs. 1250/- for all the candidates. Fee payment can be done through online mode (debit/credit card, net banking) or offline mode (by cash payment in any branch of ICICI Bank).

Eligibility Criteria
Candidates should have completed or appearing 12th or equivalent examination with Mathematics to apply for NATA.
10+2 (diploma) in any stream candidates are also eligible to apply.
International Baccalaureate diploma passed/appearing after 10th are also eligible to apply.
There is not any lateral admission criteria for admission in any stage/year of B.Arch.
The minimum age limit is 17 years as on 31st July 2017.
NATA Exam Pattern
Type of Exam: The NATA exam pattern comprises of three parts, i.e. Mathematics, General Aptitude & Drawing.
Mode: The exam will be conducted through offline mode (pen and paper based).
Questions: Total 62 questions will be asked.
Marking Scheme: In Mathematics & General Aptitude section, 2 marks will be given for each correct response.
Duration: The exam duration will be three hours.
Negative Marking: There is not any provision of negative marking in this exam.


NATA Syllabus

The NATA syllabus has been divided into three parts, i.e. drawing, Mathematics & General Aptitude. The drawing test will measure the ability to sketch a given object, sense of perspective drawing, understanding of proportion and scale, etc. The detailed syllabus is mentioned below:

Mathematics:

Algebra, Logarithms, Complex Numbers, Quadratic Equations, Matrices, Binomial Theorem (positive integral index), Trigonometry, Coordinate geometry of two dimensions, Coordinate geometry of three dimensions, Differential Calculus, Integral Calculus, Differential Equations, Application of Calculus, Vectors, Sets, Relations & Mapping, Permutation & combination and Statistics & probability.

General Aptitude:

Objects, textures related to architecture & built environment. Interpretation of pictorial compositions, visualizing three dimensional objects from two dimensional drawing. Analytical reasoning, mental ability (visual, numerical and verbal) awareness of national/international architects and their creations. Visualizing different sides of 3D objects.

Drawing Test:

Understanding scale and proportion of objects, geometric composition, shape, building forms and elements, aesthetics, colour texture, harmony and contrast. Drawing of patterns – both geometrical and abstract. Conceptualization and visualization. Form transformations in 2D and 3D like union, subtraction, rotation, surfaces and volumes. Creating 2D and 3D compositions using given shape and forms. Generating plan, elevation, and 3D views of objects. Perspective drawing, sketching of urban scape and landscape.
